Every few generations, the M5 reinvents itself. The E39 waved goodbye to the iconic straight-six and ushered in a V8. Then came the E60, bringing Formula One power with a screaming V10. In 2011, the F10 embraced turbocharging with a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8. Now, the 2025 BMW M5, the seventh iteration of this voraciously fast sedan, takes a big leap. For the first time, the M5 is a plug-in hybrid.

Powertrain
Part of what’s kept the M5 at the top of its game for decades is its ability to keep up with the times. By going hybrid, the M5 is doing what it has always done: evolving. The new M5 pairs a high-revving twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 with an electric motor and an eight-speed automatic transmission. With 717 horsepower on tap, it surpasses the last M5’s V8 by nearly 100 horses.
The new M5 will rocket from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, which is fast enough to make your passengers forget they’re in a luxury sedan. Top speed is capped at 155 mph, but if you opt for the M Driver’s Package, the limiter bumps up to a blistering 190 mph. When you’re not unleashing all that 717 hp, the 14.8 kWh battery lets you cruise around town for up to 25 miles on electric power alone.
Other Performance-Enhancing Features
The new M5 sends power from the engine, electric motor, or both through the M xDrive, BMW’s smart all-wheel-drive system. It can shift power from the front and rear wheels to keep you in control. Working with that all-wheel-drive system is an electronically controlled differential lock in the rear axle, which enhances traction and cornering performance.
Other notable features in the new M5 include adaptive dampers, big brakes, and rear-wheel steering. Also, expect your M5 to be very programmable. You can tweak everything from throttle and suspension feel to brake response and screen layout. Want a plush daily driver? Done. Prefer a sharp-edged performance machine? Also done.
Interior
Inside, the new M5 offers a comfortable, tech-forward environment. Highlights include a flat-bottom M steering, big shift paddles, unique lighting details, a head-up display, a panoramic roof, and a Bowers and Wilkins sound system with 18 speakers. You’ll sit in snug, sporty seats designed to hold you steady when you’re pushing it.
The dash is dominated by a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 14.9-inch central touchscreen running BMW’s latest iDrive 8.5 system, complete with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, video streaming, and even gaming (when parked, of course). Trim choices include everything from leather to wood and aluminum.
