How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

How many miles should you wait between rotating the tires on your BMW? As you’re most likely already aware, tires wear at different rates based on several factors, including how you drive, what the weather is like, and whether or not your BMW has two-wheel-drive or xDrive all-wheel-drive. Generally, though, you should rotate your tires every 5,000 – to 7,500 miles. Approaching the time to rotate your tires? Check your owner’s manual to learn more best practices, or better yet, contact our BMW service experts now.

Rotating Tires on FWD and RWD Vehicles

Before learning more about the difference between when to rotate tires on front-wheel-drive vs. all-wheel-drive vehicles you need to know what these BMW drivetrain systems are. The Simly put, they indicate which wheels power from the engine is sent to. For a front-wheel-drive car, it power is sent just to the front tires. In a rear-wheel drive car it is sent just to the rear tires. Many BMW models come standard with rear-wheel-drive. Regardless, if your vehicle has FWD or RWD (both fall under the umbrella category of two-wheel-drive AKA 2WD), here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Tire rotation should be performed every 5,000 to 7,500 miles on 2WD vehicles.
  • If you’re performing a DIY front-wheel-drive tire rotation, be sure to flip sides when moving the rear tires. (Your rear right tire will go on the front left and vice versa). However, keep the front tires on the same side when moving them back.
  • When rotating tires on a rear-wheel-drive car, invert the process above. Flip sides when moving the front tires back, but keep the rear tires on the same side when you move them to the front of the vehicle.
  • Tasks like drag racing, off-roading, or rough driving can all affect how often you should rotate your tires. If in doubt, reach out to our BMW experts for more tire rotation & tips or information about our BMW FASTSERVICE® .

AWD Tire Rotation Tips

On BMW models equipped with xDrive all-wheel-drive, tire wear occurs at different times and different speeds for each tire. Accordingly, most tire rotation experts set the standard mileage guideline for rotating AWD vehicle’s tires to between 3,000 and 5,000 miles. This is still just a guide, though. Check your owner’s manual to be sure. And if you can’t remember the last time your BMW had a tire rotation, schedule service at the BMW Fresno service center today, and we’ll perform an inspection and let you know!

Why Rotate Tires?

Now you know when to rotate tires. But do you know why rotating them is important? There are several reasons why it’s important to rotate tires, including:

  • Doing so relieves unnecessary stress on the drivetrain
  • Rotating tires results in improved traction on slippery roads
  • You’ll likely experience less noise on the road when you rotate tires

Remember to keep regular tire rotations in your arsenal of scheduled BMW maintenance! Ensuring to care for your tires doesn’t doesn’t mean they’ll last forever, but it certainly can help them last longer and even improve traction and gas mileage. When it’s time for new tires, though, we can help you with that too!
