How to Update BMW Software

2021 BMW M3 Entertainment

The latest BMW models offer convenient over-the-air updates, but even in older models, updating your BMW software is a simple and painless process. If you’re getting ready to learn how to update BMW software, you’ll need to determine which kind of updates your BMW requires; for that, just check your owner’s manual! When you’re ready, start here to determine your next steps.

Remote Software Upgrades

BMW began to offer Remote Software Upgrades in the Spring of 2020, and they’ve expanded the service to more vehicles since then. Many vehicles on the roads of Fresno and Clovis now offer the feature. Not sure if you need an upgrade? Don’t worry. It’s easy to use your central touchscreen to search for and install any available updates. Just follow these steps:

  1. On your touchscreen display, select “CAR”.
  2. Select “Preferences”.
  3. Select “General Preferences”.
  4. Select “Remote Software Upgrade”.
  5. Select “Search for Upgrades”.
  6. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen!

How to Perform a Partial Software Update

In older models, upgrades may be distinguished from one another based on whether they are ‘partial’ or ‘full’. Partial updates are much more common; full updates are only required if there are system-wide issues that need to be addressed.

If you’d like to perform a partial upgrade of your BMW software at home, just follow these steps:

  • Find your vehicle’s VIN and write it down.
  • Enter the VIN on BMW’s website.
  • If updates are available, download them to a USB drive.
  • Insert the USB drive into your vehicle’s USB port.
  • Navigate to “Settings” on your iDrive menu.
  • Click on “Software Update” and follow the steps that appear on the screen.
